COMMAND AND REQUEST IN JOHN GREENS THE FAULT IN OUR STARS.

Abstract
The research discusses the types of command and request utterances found in the
novel The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and then analyzes them using a pragmatic
approach. The background of this research is the students' lack of knowledge about how to
talk to teachers and fellow students at school. The data used comes from the novel by John
Green's entitled The Fault In Our Stars. The method used in this research is descriptive
qualitative method or literature study. The data in this thesis was found using the technique of
reading and recording data on speech orders and requests in John Green's novel The Fault In
Our Stars and then the data was analyzed according to speech acts. The presentation of the
data in this thesis is presented by making a list table for the speech commands and requests.
Based on the results of the analysis in this study, 24 datums were found, 20 datums in the
form of command utterances and 4 datums in the form of request utterances accompanied by
the speech situation and also the presentation of each datum with a pragmatic approach.
