Abstract

The study of meaning and function of an utterance is known as speech act. When the speaker says something, speech act occur as a result of how listener interpret the intention. Illocutionary acts are the action performed related by the speaker’s word and perform an action as a result. Illocutionary acts are the action performed related by the speaker in producing a given utterance. Searle (2010) stated that illocutionary acts have five classifications, namely: representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. But in this occasion, this research focuses in finding the most used type of illocutionary acts uttered by the main characters in The Blind Side movie. This study uses descriptive qualitative method. Data of this research re in the form of sentences or utterances containing illocutionary acts uttered by the main characters. The data collected from transcript of The Blind Side movie, then determines the type of illocutionary act utterances into one of the type of illocutionary acts, such as representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The results showed that representative is the most common type of illocutionary acts found in the transcript of The Bind Side movie, because the two main characters often uses an utterance to state about something to the hearer.
