TEACHER ROLE ANALYSIS IN HELPING STUDENTS TO FACE RACISM IN THE FREEDOM WRITERS FILM.

Abstract
This research is motivated by the problem of the teacher's role in dealing
with racism. There are two issues that are the focus of this study: I) to determine
the role of teachers in solving problems in class 2) Teacher strategies in dealing
with racism.
The method in this research is qualitative with the main focus on library
books and other documents. The data sources in this study include original and
versatile data. There are two data collection techniques in this study: 1) analyzing
the teacher's role in "freedom writers" film, 2) knowing the teacher's strategy in
dealing with racism. Data collection is done by watching and using recording
techniques.
In
the data analysis, it was found that several utterances and scenes were in
accordance with the theory of Riama &
Zulmawati (2018). The dominant ones in
this
film
are the teacher as a demonstrator, the teacher as a facilitator, and the
teacher as a motivator. This :film also
finds the teacher's way of dealing with
racism in the classroom in accordance with Schwartz's (2014) theory, namely be
visible, create a safe space, connect to live students and connect to student culture.
